crawfish etouffee like Maw Maw used to make
We had a little party this weekend with lots of crawfish. And we had some leftover crawfish. And I don't love crawfish, but my dear husband does.
I thought I would make him some crawfish etouffee with those leftovers. When I started looking for recipes, I noticed many of them used cream of mushroom soup as a base for the sauce (gag).
When I saw the title of this recipe, I knew it was the one I needed to try.
Any recipe with "Maw Maw" in the title, has to be good, right? It doesn't hurt that it calls for two sticks of butter. Let's just say I skimped a little on the butter and it didn't hurt the recipe at all.

golden crescent rolls
A long, long time ago in a galaxy far away...or maybe just in Louisiana, I was a Girl Scout. My Girl Scout leader was really awesome. She was industrious, frugal, and fun. I learned so much from her (thank you, Mindy Ford!). I remember the homemade butter we made during one troop meeting by shaking cream in a baby food jar. I also remember the delicious crescent rolls we made to go with that homemade butter. I have no idea what recipe we used for those rolls, but I have remembered them fondly all these years. Besides, I have no love for the canned crescent rolls. Something just ain't right about those things.
Last week I tried out this recipe for Golden Crescent Rolls. They were a lot of work. They took a lot of time. They didn't last very long, because they were so, very good. And they brought with them that memory of making butter and crescent rolls with my Girl Scout troop.
I was watching a YouTube video on how to knead bread.
Got my triangles cut.
All rolled up.
Baked and ready to eat!
I made one pan of regular crescent rolls. The rest I spread with butter, sugar, and cinnamon chips before I rolled them up. We had those for breakfast the next day.

sunday snapshot..christmas pie
We baked our Christmas pie a little late this year. We had so many sweet treats on Christmas day thanks to the cookies and treats we'd made plus the ones Nana brought. We didn't need any pies! That's so sad, isn't it? It worked out well anyway because Megan received a little baking kit for Christmas. She asked everyday since then if we could bake and we finally had time yesterday.
First we made a little blackberry cobbler. The blackberries were on sale this week at Kroger. Yay!
The boys measured it. I don't think they really had much reason to do that except they wanted to play with the yard stick.
Then we went to work on an apple pie. Megan helped pretty much through the whole thing. The boys jumped on in when I asked them to cut apples. They like to use knives.
Megan's set came with a mini pie pan. As soon as Seth saw an apple in his stocking, he was asking Megan to make him a little apple pie. So we did that. And we made a big one for all to share.
I guess you could say our Christmas pie turned into a New Year's pie, but I'm not sure they are going to last that long.

sunday snapshot: rolo pretzel turtles
Rolo Pretzel Turtles are so good, they are bad. Oh, so bad. for me!!!
The mixture of sweet and salty is perfect.
Megan and I made some on Saturday.
I think she unwrapped a whole bag of Rolos and didn't eat one until I said she could.
She is a great little helper. I love my sweet girl.

to pie
I made a royal mess of my oven because all I did was stick my whole pumpkin in the oven in a much too small pan. I wouldn't recommend that unless you're just really itchin' to clean your oven or you're blessed to have a double oven that you can cook out of until you have time to clean it....guess what I'm doing? Let's just say that the bottom oven has gotten more use since Wednesday than it has since we moved into this house.
But I was so pleased with all my pumpkin. It makes me want to take the two pumpkins off the stoop and shove them into the oven. Although, I'm not sure we would eat that much pumpkin, even over a whole year. Just from this one, I got 8 cups. Next up is pumpkin muffins.
